If
it’s February it must be the Devon Open Judo Championship
in Ilfracombe. Our intrepid band of fighters left Torbay
around 7 o’clock on Sunday 2nd February 2003, for
the long drawn out trip to North Devon. Weigh-in time
was from 9.15 onwards. The group, although depleted in
numbers because of illness and unavailability, were now
more confident of winning something than ever before,
this being their second trip to the contest, even though
two of the seven had never entered a competition before.
After an initial worry when one of the fighters took a
rather unorthodox route to Ilfracombe, and was late to
weigh-in, the contest began. Everyone fought very well,
some fought better than expected, some didn’t achieve
what they were after, but everyone enjoyed himself or
herself. |
The winners
of trophies were:
| Ben Corbishley |
Primary boys under 30Kg |
Bronze |
| Alex Paske |
Junior boys under 45kg |
Silver |
| Min Vincent |
Junior girls under 50Kg |
Bronze |
| Vicky Corbishley |
Junior girls under 55Kg
|

| Charlotte Lovell |
Junior girls under 60Kg |

| Richard Daniels |
Junior boys over 60Kg |
Silver |
Sam Vincent also competed, in Junior boys over 60Kg
.
The only senior on the mat was Brian Hopkins who won
a silver medal.
With the number of entrants, and the high standard
of fighters at the competition, the group from Torbay
must be very pleased with themselves.
