South West Regional Senior Grading

Bridgwater, 23rd September 2006

It was a successful day out in Bridgwater this year for the Torbay Judo Club members who attended the grading, as all four achieved a higher grade.

Joe Vincent and Robert Edge were both hoping to earn blue tabs to go on their junior green belts. There was a poor turnout for the junior grading session this year, but there were just enough to continue with the grading. Both Joe and Robert got through the initial theory session without difficulty, and then had to fight the other junior green belts to earn the chance to demonstrate their kata. Both boys fought well - including a particularly spirited battle against each other, which ended in a draw. They performed the necessary kata with confidence. Robert was awarded three blue tabs and Joe earned his second blue tab.

Naomi Vincent gave a great performance in her battle to achieve her blue belt, winning five out of her six fights in spite of being the smallest of the female green belts on the mat. She demonstrated her versatility by winning her bouts with a variety of throws, hold-downs, strangles and armlocks. She went on to practise the kata, and was awarded the 2nd Kyu grade blue belt.

Andy Luker was the last on the mat, and had to endure several long, hard bouts of judo. It was worth it in the end, as he finally gained a well-deserved 1st Kyu brown belt.

Well done Andy, Naomi, Robert and Joe!
