Carn Brea Leisure Centre
Sunday 10th October 2004
This is the second year that Torbay Judo Club has made its presence felt at the BJC Cornish Open Contest. Following on last year's success, when they came away with four gold medals and two silver medals, eight club members made their way down to Carn Brea Leisure Centre at the weekend in the hope of a repeat performance. They were not to be disappointed, achieving a fantastic seven medals between them.
In the Junior Boys section, Ben Corbishley won silver in the Under 35 kg category, after a tense final fight for gold medal position, and Robert Edge gained a bronze medal in the Junior Boys Under 55 kg, a great result for his first contest.
In the Junior Girls section, Vicky Corbishley won a gold medal and Naomi Vincent won bronze in the Under 55 kg category. Rebecca Hayward gained a bronze medal in the Under 45 kg, quite an achievement as she should still be fighting in the primary section and was competing against girls who were two or three years older than her.
Sam Vincent, Richard Daniels and Alex Edge all competed in the Senior Male Espoir section. Alex was unlucky not to achieve a place in the Under 65 kg. In the Over 71 kg category, Sam won a silver medal and Richard won bronze.
As always seems to be the case in competition judo, there were controversial decisions, lucky breaks and some not so lucky, but all team players fought well and were a credit to the Club.
